HERNIA

An organ, intestine, or fatty tissue might herniate when it pushes through a break or weak area in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. A common location for hernias is the abdominal wall. A hernia may occasionally show itself as an external bulge, especially when bearing down or straining.

Types of Hernias

  • Parastomal hernia
  • Recurrent hernia
  • Giant abdominal hernia
  • Incisional hernia
  • Ventral hernia
  • Umbilical hernia
  • Femoral hernia
  • Inguinal hernia

Treatment Options

Non-Surgical:

Watchful Waiting - Your surgeon will monitor the hernia to ensure it does not enlarge or become problematic.

Despite this, hernias can only be repaired surgically.

Surgical:

Laparoscopic - To repair the hernia, the surgeon makes a number of tiny abdominal incisions through which surgical instruments can pass. Surgical mesh can be used or not during laparoscopic procedures.

Open Repair - The weak muscle area is treated by the surgeon making an incision close to the hernia. Surgical mesh can be used in open repair procedures.
